Twenty-five minutes inland from the house, Holt is the kind of small market town that makes you want to move there. After a great fire in 1708 it was rebuilt in brick, and the Georgian streets that resulted are now lined with independent shops.

How to do it

Park once and walk. Start with coffee, then work your way slowly through the yards and side streets: second-hand bookshops, galleries, kitchen shops, delis with local cheese and bread. There is no need to buy anything. There is every chance you will.

Park once, and walk.

Make a day of it

From nearby Holt station, the heritage steam railway runs down to Sheringham on the coast. From there it is a short drive, or a longer walk along the cliffs, back to Saltmere in time for tea.
