The Lookout

The top of the house, given over to the sky.

The whole second floor, reached by its own narrow stair. Windows on two sides take in the North Sea from Cromer pier round to Overstrand, and the copper bath sits exactly where the light is best. There is a window seat for the binoculars, two old leather chairs for the evening, and nothing whatsoever to do.

Key features
Second floor, private stair
46 m²
Super king bed, Norfolk wool mattress
Hammered copper bath facing the sea
Dual-aspect sea views
Window seat and binoculars

Sea Holly

A bay window with the North Sea for company.

A first-floor room built around its bay. The window seat is deep enough to sleep in, and people do. Sea Holly faces due north over the cliff path, so the light stays soft all day and the sea changes colour by the hour. The walk-in shower is tiled by hand in chalk-white zellige.

Key features
First floor
34 m²
King bed in pale oak
Walk-in rain shower
Bay window seat with sea view
Antique pine and linen

Samphire

Garden doors, a stone bath and a fire of your own.

The garden suite opens straight onto a brick terrace of its own, with the walled garden just beyond. Samphire has sage-painted panelling, a cast-iron log burner laid ready each afternoon, and a bath carved from a single piece of pale limestone. Summer evenings belong on the terrace.

Key features
Ground floor garden suite
40 m²
King bed
Carved limestone bath
Private terrace to the walled garden
Log burner

Marram

Under the old beams, a round window to the sea.

Tucked under the original roof timbers, Marram is the smallest room in the house and the one guests ask for by name. A round window in the gable frames a perfect circle of sea. The roll-top bath sits beneath the eaves with a roof light overhead, so on clear nights you can bathe under the stars.

Kittiwake

Quiet fields, a church tower and a four-poster.

On the landward side of the house, Kittiwake looks across the paddock and barley towards a round-towered flint church. It is the quietest room at Saltmere and the best for sleeping late. The four-poster is limed oak, the bathroom has a marble washstand, and the view is pure North Norfolk.

Limed-oak four-poster, king size
Shower with terracotta floor

The most private place to stay at Saltmere. The Old Dairy is a single-storey flint cottage at the far end of the walled garden, with an open fire, a stable door onto the long grass and a copper bath on the deck outside. Breakfast arrives in a basket. Well-behaved dogs are welcome here.
